About
Danzel, born Johan Waem on November 9th, 1976, embarked on his music career at the tender age of 15 when he founded the Belgian pop-rock band “Scherp op Snee” and assumed the role of lead vocalist. A self-taught multi-instrumentalist, he also became the band’s bass player. In addition to his work with the band, he served as the backing vocalist in “The la band,” accompanying renowned artists in Belgium. Danzel’s innate talent and charisma extended to songwriting and composition, allowing him to craft his own music.
His journey to professional success began in 2003 when he participated in the Belgian version of “Idols” and reached the final 20 contestants.
Shortly after his “Idols” experience, Danzel crossed paths with Jaco van Rijswijk, a producer known for major hits in the ’90s. Jaco introduced Danzel to the world of dance music, a significant departure from Danzel’s rock music background. By the end of 2003, the N.E.W.S. record label proposed they remake a song by “The Black & White Brothers” called “Pump It Up.” This marked the beginning of a remarkable journey.
It’s no secret that “Pump It Up” became a smash hit, signing with major labels worldwide and selling over 4 million copies globally. The track reached the top 10 in nearly every country, earning numerous gold and platinum records. His vocals from the song were featured in countless remixes, used by artists like “The Black Eyed Peas” in 2009 and 2019 and Dimitri Vegas, Like Mike & Steve Aoki in 2022.
Following “Pump It Up,” Danzel delivered other major international hits such as “Put Your Hands Up In The Air,” “You Spin Me Round,” “My Arms Keep Missing You,” “What Is Life,” “Under Arrest,” and more.
Danzel collaborated with prominent artists and producers like DJ F.R.A.N.K., Regi, Laurent Wery, Rebel, Airwave, Mirami, Kabe, and many others. He embarked on an extensive tour, performing to audiences that sometimes exceeded 200,000 people around the world.
His achievements include an Eska Award in Poland, an MTV music award in Russia, numerous gold and platinum records for single and album sales, over 100,000,000 views on YouTube, and over 60,000,000 streams on Spotify, and more.
Poland is one of Danzel’s largest markets, and since 2009, he has been touring there with a full band show, further elevating his entertainment value. He is often described by viewers as “a bolt of energy.”
In 2022, he was invited by Polish TV channel “Polsat” to compete in the popular TV show “Your Face Sounds Familiar.” He made history as the first international artist to participate and claimed victory after performing as Seal, Tina Turner, Joe Cocker, Lenny Kravitz, and others.
